China is preparing for "Short and Sharp" war with Japan over disputed East China Sea islands...

"China’s military has been beefing up training as the country continues keeping an unwavering stance on various territory disputes with its neighbors. In particular, according to a U.S. naval officer China has been preparing for possible military action over the ongoing dispute with Japan over a small cluster of islands in the East China Sea, and the more recent air-defense zone dispute.

According to a report by the United States Naval Institution, part of China’s Mission Action 2013 exercise, a military drill that includes all branches of the country’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA), included preparation for combat to take over the Senkaku/ Diaoyu Islands, Capt. James Fannell, deputy chief of staff intelligence and information operations for the U.S. Pacific Fleet, said.

We witnessed the massive amphibious and cross military region enterprise -- Mission Action 2013,” Fannell said during a conference last week in San Diego, Calif. “[We] concluded that the PLA has been given the new task to be able to conduct a short sharp war to destroy Japanese forces in the East China Sea following with what can only be expected a seizure of the Senkakus or even a southern Ryukyu [islands] – as some of their academics say.”

Oh yeah, time for the US to have a Cold War with China... The US is obligated to defend Japan via treaty.

The US does have economic interests in that part of the Pacific. China wants to control the navigation in that area and it is trying to make claims on territory that are not even based on landmarks. This is against international law and their control can effect the global economy. Also, as I said - the US is obligated by treaty to defend Japan.

Piracy.. China has pirated trade secrets and reverse engineered everything from seeds to electronics. Now they are feeling the need to take resources because their economy is slowing. Other than that, yes - there is similar psychology.

Actually, in my opinion China and Russia's motivations are similar. For similar reasons Russia wants Ukraine back under it's control. Also, I think world leaders have seen the incompetence of the US primate in chief (as Clarise put it) and they could be viewing it as an opportunity.

The invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq were supposed to be short and sharp wars. I hope the Chinese have more sense than to go through with this.

 

Perhaps the treaties are an excuse, but regardless - it's still all about money, ridgerunner. It is all because that part of the Pacific has a huge impact on the global economy. The US will come to the aid of Japan and the Philippines and China knows it. The US navy has carriers in that part of the Pacific and they are not leaving.

 

The Chinese did soften a little temporarily when the US first brought a carrier into the area, but now it looks the Chinese are really training for war with Japan. Will the Chinese really do it? I guess that remains to be seen.

 

The US will surely have to step in even if only for moral support if the Chinese wind up the Japs any more?

Can everyone just be happy with what they have for once? The war lords use anything for an excuse to have a war. If everyone minds their own business for one year and let greed go, it may surprise them how much better shit goes

 

The fools in the White House might think we can sit out of a "short sharp" war of aggression and conquest between China and one of our most important allies.

One thing is for certain: China strongly suspects that this is precisely the case. Surely Putin would not need convincing at this point, but China is still testing the waters.

And if we prove them right, we are fucked.

The Senkaku islands are barren rocks. What's next? Taiwan? Southern Japan?

Who thinks wars of conquest are obsolete in the New Era of Peace, just because the witless wonders on these shores have declared it so? Let's see a show of hands.

 

That is the question of the mindset that believes one can avoid conquest by walking away. We do not choose war. War chooses us.
