As an ideology people are willing to kill and die for Marxism hardly exists anymore. The writings of Karl Marx do influence the thinking of most educated people in the West. That does not make them Marxists. It only means that they have the intellectual sophistication to read Marx critically for valid insights, while rejecting his mistakes.

For the most part "Marxist" is simply a derogatory term those on the right direct against those who present criticisms of capitalism. In this regard "Marxist" is similar to "racist." Karl Marx had two valid insights, and made one critical mistake. He detected as soon as 1847 when he wrote The Communist Manifesto that the natural tendencies of unregulated capitalism are to concentrate wealth at the top and to experience increasingly serious economic downturns. That is what did happen from 1847 to 1933, when Franklin Roosevelt was inaugurated. The policies of the New Deal counteracted these tendencies. Recessions became milder and fewer. Most American got pay raises every year that beat inflation.

Since the policies of the New Deal began to be repealed with the administration of Ronald Reagan the tendencies recognized by Karl Marx have again shown themselves.

Marx's main mistake was to assume that among working class people class loyalties are stronger than loyalties of race, nation, and ethnicity. The opposite has been more nearly the case. The writings of Karl Marx can explain the Great Depression. They cannot explain the First World War, the rise of Fascism and Nazism, and the popularity of the Klu Klux Klan in the United States.

Additional mistakes by Marx include the labor theory of value. This ignores the law of supply and demand.

Contrary to what Marx claimed, there is no natural progression from primitive communism to slavery to feudalism to capitalism to socialism to pure communism in a classless society. The revival of slavery in the New World should have taught Marx that.

Dialectical Materialism is pure mythology.

Anyone with a degree of intellectual sophistication should be able to tell that I am not a Marxist. Instead, I think that like many political thinkers he had valid insights, but made critical mistakes.

You do not seem to have read Marx. You are simply repeating what others have told you to think about him.

 

The problem with Karl Marx's ideas are the same as the one with Jesus's - human beings have trouble, 1. Understanding them, and 2. Living by them. And oddly enough, they're not that different.

 

Karl Marx devoted most of his writing to condemning capitalism and arguing that there were within capitalism forces that would eventually destroy it, and lead to an egalitarian society.

When Lenin and his Bolsheviks seized power in Russia they discovered that there was little in the writings of Marx telling them how to operate a socialist economy.

I have found the best articulation of the Marxist ideal of life in the classless society after the Revolution in John Lennon's song "Imagine."
